Green Tatzylwurm

GM's Eyes Only

Spoilers. This page is written for the GM, and players who read on will learn things their characters don't know.

A leaping, cat-headed mountain wyrm with poison breath. Made for Tir Hathar, as a cousin of the Black Tatzylwurm.

What it is. Smaller and stockier than the black: about eight feet long, mottled green and grey like lichen on stone, with a flattened, cat-like head and two short, clawed forelegs. It has no back legs, but it can coil and leap twenty feet in a single bound. This is the Tatzelwurm of Alpine folklore: tatze is German for "paw."

The hunt. Solitary, or a mated pair. It waits among boulders and rockfalls, still as a stone, and launches at goats, dogs, and the occasional herder who wanders too close. Its breath is a foul, poisonous hiss that leaves victims retching. Mountain folk say you hear a thin whistle just before it strikes, and that the whistle is the only warning you'll get.

In Tir Hathar. The name is Dwarven, like the black's, and the green is the one the Dwarves actually meet: it lives in the high pastures and rockfalls of the Dwarven ranges.

Stats

First draft, built from WWN's baseline stat lines.

HD AC Atk Dmg Shock Move ML Inst Skill Save
Green Tatzylwurm 3 14 +4 x2 1d6 1/13 30' (leap 20') 8 6 +1 14+
  • Leap. It can bound 20 feet as part of its Move, over any terrain, and attack at the end of the leap. A leap from hiding gives it +2 to hit.
  • Poison breath. Once per scene, as its Main Action: a 15-foot cone. Everyone in it takes 2d6 damage, with a Physical save for half. Anyone who fails also loses their next Move action, retching.
  • Stone-still. Motionless among rocks, it gets +2 to stealth.
  • The whistle. Anyone who makes a Wis/Notice check against difficulty 9 hears it just before it strikes, and isn't surprised.

Still open: playtesting the numbers.
