Bodger¶
Working draft, not locked in. The rules for mods, runes, and engines are in Runes, Mods, and Engines.
A Bodger is the hand that keeps everyone else's gear working. Grease and ingenuity rather than arcane theory: Mechanika school theory sits behind everything a Bodger does, but a Bodger never had to study it. Bodgers build mods and engines, and they keep a party's modded gear, and its Mechaniks' engines, running. A Bodger can't build runes.
In Tir Hathar, building mods takes the Artisan Focus, even for an Expert. The Bodger is the class built around it.
Bodger¶
The Bodger is an Expert, reworked. Hit dice, attack bonus, Focus picks, and Quick Learner are as the Expert's.
- Built-in Artisan. Artisan Level 1 takes the place of the Expert's free Focus at 1st level, and Artisan Level 2 comes automatically at 4th level, a level before anyone else can take it. A Bodger can't also take the Artisan Focus.
- Narrowed knack. The Expert's Masterful Expertise, its once-per-scene reroll of a failed skill check, works only on Craft checks.
- Field Repairs. A Bodger clears a maintenance backlog in ten minutes rather than an hour.
Partial Bodger¶
The Adventurer's Partial Expert, reworked the same way. Hit dice, attack bonus, and Focus picks are as the Partial Expert's.
- Built-in Artisan. Artisan Level 1 takes the place of the Partial Expert's free Focus, and Artisan Level 2 comes automatically at 4th level. A Partial Bodger can't also take the Artisan Focus.
- Field Repairs. As the Bodger.
- No Quick Learner. The Partial Bodger gives up the Partial Expert's extra skill point each level, the way the full Bodger gives up most of its reroll.
Pairings¶
- Runewright (Partial Mechanik/Partial Bodger): builds runes, mods, and engines. See Spells and Arts, Mechanika.
- Partial Bodger/Partial Warrior: a fighting smith who keeps their own kit running.
A party with a Partial Mechanik/Partial Warrior, or with any Mechanik who isn't a Runewright, needs a Bodger to build and maintain their engines. That's deliberate: supporting each other is part of how this works. A Warcaster wants a Bodger working on the armor alongside them, and a Vehicle Engine may need a whole crew.
